ASTIR Completes Gap Analysis of AI-Augmented Robotics Software Engineering

ASTIR has completed a comprehensive analysis of current research and industrial practice in robotics software engineering.

The study combines a review of generative AI research with evidence collected from robotics practitioners. It examines activities across the software lifecycle, including requirements engineering, architecture and design, code generation, testing, security analysis, deployment, maintenance and runtime monitoring.

The findings confirm that generative AI could provide valuable support for robotics developers, particularly where engineering teams must process complex technical information, coordinate heterogeneous tools or validate software under changing operational conditions. At the same time, industrial adoption depends on resolving concerns about reliability, traceability, integration, data protection and the trustworthiness of generated results.

The gap analysis provides an evidence base for the technologies being developed in ASTIR. It helps the consortium focus its work on practical engineering needs rather than isolated demonstrations of large language model capabilities.

The results will also inform the design of the ASTIR workbench, its evaluation criteria and the three industrial use cases in manufacturing robotics, service robotics and agricultural drones.
